Hay algunos santos que destacan sobre otros y son venerados especialmente por el pueblo armenio. Uno de ellos es San Sarkis. Los padres llaman Sarkis a sus hijos y, como apellido, Sarkisian es bastante común. Hace algunos años, el Catolicós de Todos los Armenios, Su Santidad Karekin II, designó a San Sarkis como el santo patrón de la juventud. Hoy en día, los jóvenes hacen fila en las iglesias para recibir una bendición especial en la fiesta de San Sarkis, la cual se celebra en esta época del año, después de la Teofanía y antes de la Gran Cuaresma.

Sarkis es un santo del siglo IV, romano de nacimiento y nombrado por Constantino el Grande como Príncipe de Capadocia (junto a Armenia, la actual Kayseri). Y aunque está separado de nosotros por el espacio y el tiempo, el mensaje que proviene de su historia habla directamente a nuestro día y época.

Con la conversión de Constantino al cristianismo y el gozo de la recién descubierta religión cristiana, Sarkis recorrió todo el Imperio convirtiendo a las personas con el mensaje de fe, esperanza y amor. Sin embargo, cuando llegó a Persia, el rey Shaboo exigió que Sarkis dejara de predicar a Cristo y, en su lugar, adorara ante sus altares paganos. La respuesta de Sarkis al rey fue: "Creo en un solo Dios, la Santísima Trinidad, quien ha creado el cielo y la tierra. Como hombre, hecho de la tierra, puedo destruir tus estatuas paganas y el fuego que adoras".

This proclamation against the religion of the day infuriated the people and they began beating Sarkis with stones and clubs. They finally imprisoned him in the hopes that he would deny Christ, but he remained loyal to his faith. He was sentenced to death for his Christian faith and the “crime” of bringing people to Christ.

I will spare you the details of his death, which are rather gory, but I need to mention that he left an indelible mark on the psyche of the people. To this day, even among the Persians, Sarkis is referred to as “The invincible witness and grantor of all requests.”

Even today, some folk myths still circulate among the people with seeing St. Sarkis in dreams, eating salt and water as signals for falling in love and betrothal.

Today, as we recount the story of St. Sarkis, we have to lift it off the pages of history and see it as a lesson in convictions and faith. In fact, today, Christians are being persecuted daily for their beliefs. We may not see the swords of the emperors or outright proclamations such as King Shaboo’s, but the weapons that strike us are just as deadly. Our lives are filled with temptations by materialism – believing that our possessions define us and carry some kind of intrinsic worth – while being swayed by a general attitude of indifference towards the plight of others. Death comes to us because of contempt for Christ’s call to Love.

Haríamos bien en tomar en serio el llamado de nuestro Catolicós. San Sarkis nos da un ejemplo de convicción, de fe, de disciplina y de verdadera fortaleza. En un mundo que enseña lo contrario, este santo de la Iglesia Armenia debería ser bienvenido, no solo en las vidas de nuestros jóvenes, sino en todas nuestras vidas.

Oremos: "Oh Cristo, director de la vida y la eternidad, como tu siervo San Sarkis demostró con su vida, permite que tu mensaje y tu gloria se reflejen en la mía. Que pueda honrar a San Sarkis, y a todos los santos, viviendo contigo en el centro de mi vida, hoy y siempre. Amén."
