Armodoxy for Today: The Example of Joseph

Of all the characters in the Nativity narratives, Joseph, the husband of Mary, the Mother of Jesus, is often the least discussed. Sometimes he’s even forgotten. According to the Gospel record, “After … Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit.  Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.’” (Matthew 1)

Según las Escrituras y la Tradición de la Iglesia, José era carpintero de oficio y vivía en Nazaret de Galilea. Se le describe como un hombre justo y un devoto hombre de fe, como lo demuestra su obediencia al mandato de Dios. San Mateo continúa: “Cuando despertó José del sueño, hizo como el ángel del Señor le había mandado, y recibió a su mujer. Joseph gives us a very unique example by which to guide our lives. When we pray, we articulate, “Thy Kingdom come, Thy Will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” We ask that God’s Will be evident in our lives, here on earth. Jesus instructs us to pray these words because God’s Will is manifested here on earth through our participation. We pray and articulate it as such to remind us that we are participants in the Kingdom. Joseph understood that if God’s Kingdom was to come, his participation was essential. And so against all the odds, against the conventions and norms of the day, against the possibilities and improbability of a virgin birth, against the put downs of gossiping mouth, and humiliation by members of his own community, Joseph says, “Thy Will be Done” and obediently follows the order to take Mary as his wife.

Armodoxia para hoy: Estructura

The Armenian Church has unique readings for every day of the calendar year. These are daily prescriptions for the soul and mind, to be taken with plenty of fresh air and fresh thoughts. The fact that the Nativity stories of Jesus Christ as prescribed after the Theophany, and not before, is enough to tell us that Scripture is not meant as a history lesson, or a chronology, rather it is a means of bringing structure to our lives.

Las estructuras se construyen sobre cimientos multifacéticos. El aire fresco sopla y comienzas a comprender de nuevas maneras que tu lado espiritual está vivo, evoluciona, es desafiado y, al mismo tiempo, te desafía a ti.

Jesús nació en Belén y María, su madre, «lo envolvió en pañales y lo acostó en un pesebre, porque no había lugar para ellos en el mesón». (Lucas 2:6). Un pesebre es un comedero para animales. Es lo suficientemente pequeño para un bebé y lo bastante seguro para servir como una cuna acogedora. El hecho de que los pesebres se encuentren en graneros y establos nos hace creer que los primeros testigos del nacimiento de Cristo fueron animales de granja. Estas suposiciones y deducciones son formas agradables de desarrollar una historia y contribuir a un relato histórico. The fresh air that blows gives us fresh thoughts. For most, January 6 is referred to as “Armenian Christmas” because the Armenians are the only ones who continue to celebrate the Nativity on January 6. A spiritual life cannot be sustained on this alone. As we learned during our meditations throughout the Advent season, the feast of Theophany is an overwhelming, life-changing and life-building event. It is the acknowledgment that the God of the Universe is revealed to humanity. Thus, the foundation for our spiritual life is much deeper and sounder than a birthday celebration.

Comprender la Teofanía yuxtapuesta a la narrativa de que «no había lugar en la posada» nos desafía ahora a pensar más allá de los hechos históricos. ¿Dónde se encuentran los pesebres en nuestras vidas? ¿Dónde puede descansar Dios de manera cómoda y acogedora? ¿Pueden nuestras vidas —nuestros corazones— funcionar como pesebres y, de ser así, cómo anticipamos que Dios crezca con nuestras vidas? ¿Qué tipo de poder poseeríamos? En un pesebre personal, donde Dios está situado de forma cómoda y acogedora, ¿puede haber lugar para el odio, la intolerancia, el fanatismo o el racismo? Y ahí radica la diferencia de Armodoxia: es tu responsabilidad preparar el espacio, el pesebre, el corazón, para que Dios pueda habitar en él.

Let us pray, O Lord our God, you are the Way, the Truth and the Life. Today, I invite you into the coziest spot in my life, dwell in me as you dwelt in the saints and keep me from temptation so I may be delivered from evil. Amen.

Post-Teofanía: Avance rápido hacia los antecedentes

El Universo es un sistema ordenado de cuerpos, fuerzas e interacciones. La Iglesia armenia organiza sus liturgias y eventos de acuerdo con un calendario. El periodo posterior a la Teofanía cuenta 40 días hasta el evento de "Dyaruntarch" o la Presentación, descrito en el capítulo 2 de Lucas. Puede parecer un poco extraño y al revés, pero durante este periodo posterior a la Teofanía, se examinan en las Sagradas Escrituras los eventos que conducen a la Teofanía.

A menudo, la Natividad de Cristo, comúnmente conocida como Navidad, se considera la primera de todas las celebraciones de la vida de Jesucristo. Los relatos evangélicos fueron escritos para compartir las Buenas Nuevas. Las Buenas Nuevas estaban contenidas en la persona de Jesucristo. Los relatos de la Natividad en los Evangelios de San Mateo y San Lucas se presentaron para responder a las preguntas que la gente tenía sobre los antecedentes de Jesús: ¿Cuáles fueron las circunstancias que rodearon su nacimiento? ¿De dónde era? ¿Cuál era su conexión con José el Carpintero?

Como recordarás, en preparación para la Teofanía (el periodo de Adviento que acabamos de concluir), nos enfocamos en nuestro crecimiento espiritual para aceptar el poder de la Teofanía. Ahora, nosotros también, al igual que los primeros cristianos, miraremos hacia atrás a las historias que provienen de la infancia de Jesús. Por esta razón, la Iglesia armenia asigna los relatos de la Natividad a los días posteriores a la Teofanía. Las historias con las que todos estamos familiarizados de forma periférica serán el centro de nuestro próximo viaje en el camino hacia la Presentación o Diaruntarch.

Let us pray, Lord Jesus Christ, we are in the joy celebrating your Nativity and Revelation. We stand in awe of your presence in our life. Open our hearts and our minds to all that is You, as we begin in our Scriptural study of the Nativity narratives. May your holy name be glorified today and always. Amen.

Armodoxy for Today: The Theophany – Christ is born and revealed!

We have arrived at the Theophany. Advent has prepared us to accept with clarity and purpose, the great news: Christ is Born and Revealed. More than a “Christmas Celebration” we now understand the great Revelation: “For God so love the world that he gave his only begotten Son…” (John 3:16) Most have learned or memorized this passage by heart. Following Advent, and this Advent Journey, I trust that these words resonate deep in your spiritual consciousness.

It is not by accident that we have not spoken about the virgin birth, the obedience of Joseph, the visit of the Magi or the shepherds’ vigil thus far. No worries, we will. But today we move to the Baptism of Jesus, the starting point of his ministry. The Baptism is recorded by all the evangelists – Matthew, Mark, Luke and John – in their Gospels. In a very real sense, his baptism was the “birth” of him ministry. Reading the account of St. Matthew (chapter 3) we find, “When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, ‘This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.’”

At this one moment in history, God is revealed as the Holy Trinity. The Son of God stands in the River Jorden, the Holy Spirit descends on Jesus in a dovelike manner and the voice of God the Father is heard. The Revelation of all three Persons of the Holy Trinity gives definition to the Feast of “Theophany.” Asdvadzahaydnoutiun

In the Armenian Church the Feast of Theophany encompasses all of the events in the life of our Lord Jesus from his Birth to his Baptism. At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, water is blessed to symbolize the Baptism of Jesus. Into the water is poured Holy Miuron, that is chrism or “Holy Oil” which comes from the time of Christ and is preserved and renewed in the Armenian Church every seven years.

Today is a new beginning. It is a new day of celebration. In modern terms, you can think of it as a hard reset, it is like hitting the reset button on your device and coming back to the original form. In this case, were back – reset – life as it was meant to be. Today, the Light shines bright, for the Author of Light is shining in our hearts.

Now that you have arrived at Theophany after this intense period of Advent, I invite you to follow along the daily podcasts, “Armodoxy for Today” where we will explore the intricacies of the Armenian Church and her faith. It is the eve of Theophany. You might expect a message about a babe in a mangers or a star in the sky flashing, but instead we take a detour on the final day of Advent and grab

Revelation story from the Book of Daniel.

On the Eve of Theophany, in all Armenian churches, this story, referred to as the “Song of the Three” is chanted from Daniel chapter 3 and responded to with a rebellious song against the powers of the world, pledging loyalty to God.

Many stories from the Old Testament feature royalty, and this one doesn’t disappoint. This about King Nebuchadnezzar. As the story is read, he has constructed a huge gold statue celebrating himself and his magnificent prowess. He has sent out an order for everyone in his kingdom to come forward, pay homage and worship before the statue. Should anyone refuse to do so, the penalty was death by means of a fiery furnace. Three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, refuse the order of the King. The orders for punishment are carried out and Shadrah, Meshach and Abed-Nego are thrown into the fiery furnace. They go in singing the praises of God and survive the heat and flames.

Their song, “The Song of the Three,”* says, “O Nebuchadnezzar, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us from your hand… But if not, let it be known to you… that we do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the gold image which you have set up.”

Nebuchadnezzar is furious at their contempt and their rebellious attitude. He has the heat turned up seven-fold. The three men continue to sing the praise of God.

The narrator continues to describe the intensity of the heat being so great that the guards who took the men into the furnace were killed in the flames, but Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego went unhurt, and continued to sing the praise of God. The King, looks into the furnace and out of astonishment yells out, “Did we not cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? … Look! I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire; and they are not hurt, and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.”

On the Eve of Theophany, the Eve of the Celebration of Jesus Christ being born and revealed, this Scriptural passage is read in all the Armenian churches as a reminder that during our worst moments, when the heat is on and even exceeding normal expectations of survival, our salvation is in God. God is revealed in our midst. He never abandons us. The story of the three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego is retold as a prelude to the greatest story ever told, a prelude to the Birth of the Savior, who stands with us during our most difficult moments and we find a loving and caring Father who never abandons us.

Tonight, we greet one another with the great news: Christ is born and revealed, blessed be the revelation of Christ!

Let us pray, “O Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Son of the Father, on this evening You entered the world. The Word was made flesh. Keep the freshness of this story ever present in my life. Tonight, we finish this preparatory period of Advent, and I am ready to fully engage with You and Your Revelation, tomorrow at the Theophany. May I never turn away from this connection to Life and this Truth. In all things I praise you along with the Father and Holy Spirit. Amen.”

 

*Nota: La historia del rey Nabucodonosor y los tres hombres se encuentra en Daniel 3 y te recomiendo encarecidamente que la leas en su totalidad. El Cántico de los tres jóvenes es parte del canon armenio, es decir, está en la Biblia ortodoxa tradicional y en la católica romana. Desafortunadamente, los protestantes (incluidas las iglesias evangélicas armenias) han eliminado el Cántico de los tres jóvenes de las Sagradas Escrituras junto con otros libros, y los han colocado en un grupo de libros etiquetados como “Apócrifos” (es decir, “ocultos”). Armodoxy for Today: And Now the Nativity

Cuando comenzamos a recorrer el Adviento, mencioné que existen tres narrativas evangélicas sobre el nacimiento de Jesucristo. Todos conocemos el relato de la Natividad de San Mateo, con el nacimiento virginal y la visita de los Magos. De igual manera, sabemos que San Lucas presenta la Natividad en el contexto del censo, con José y María buscando un lugar donde dar a luz en un establo porque no había "lugar en el mesón". Los ángeles anuncian la Buena Nueva con las palabras: "Paz en la tierra y buena voluntad entre los hombres".

La tercera historia de la Natividad no se lee como las otras dos. Está registrada por el evangelista San Juan en su Evangelio. El tiempo al que se hace referencia no es hace dos mil años, sino al principio de todos los tiempos. Se lee de la siguiente manera:

"En el principio era el Verbo, y el Verbo estaba con Dios, y el Verbo era Dios. Él estaba en el principio con Dios. Todas las cosas fueron hechas por medio de Él, y sin Él nada de lo que ha sido hecho, fue hecho. En Él estaba la vida, y la vida era la luz de los hombres. Y la luz resplandece en las tinieblas, y las tinieblas no la comprendieron".

The final narrative, the one according to St. John, is about the eternal presence of the Christ. The holy words of scripture point to the Eternal One, the Creator and the Source of Light. And now, “The Word became flesh” and “Dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” (14)

Nos referimos a este evento como la Teofanía, es decir, la Revelación de Dios. En armenio, la palabra es descriptiva del evento: Asdvadzahaydnutiun. En Jesucristo, Dios se revela a la humanidad. La Natividad es parte de la Teofanía. Aquel que estaba en el principio, el que tomó la nada y creó las estrellas y el cielo, el mar y el paisaje, está ahora entre nosotros. El Adviento nos ha preparado para este momento y ahora entendemos que, por mucho que nos preparemos, nunca estaremos lo suficientemente preparados para estar en Su presencia. Solo por Su gracia podemos encontrar la expresión de asombro que surge de nuestro ser interior.

January 6 is the feast of Theophany, Asdvadzahaydnutiun. It arrives in two days. The 50 days of Advent have been filled with lessons from Holy Scriptures and the teachings of Jesus Christ. We are ready to view the Theophany through the lens of Armodoxy. That means, with awe we await to witness the Nativity from Bethlehem to our homes. We look up to the heavens and see the shining star guiding us to the stable where the Child Jesus is wrapped in swaddling clothe and lays in a manger. And the spot under the star is in our neighborhood, close to home. Armodoxy asks us to understand that the star shines above Artsakh, Ukraine, the Congo, Ecuador, and San Salvador, Moscow, Ethiopia, Bangladesh, Darfur, and even under Wall Street, and the seemingly glowing hubs on the world, because most of all, we understand that Jesus Christ is revealed where humanity struggles, whether physically, emotionally or spiritually. The Theophany will be here and we are ready to greet one another with a message of hope, love and faith.

Let us pray, Lord God, on this Holy Day you came into a world in the most lowly of all conditions. You came to share Your Divine message with us. Fill us with the power of the Holy Spirit. Give us strength to marvel at the wonders of this Day and to stand in awe. Give us the perception to see the star of Bethlehem everywhere where you are born to those in need, to us and those who hurt. Amen.

Armodoxy for Today: Service, Advent’s Last Stop

Comenzamos este viaje bajo la dirección de la Iglesia hace casi 50 días. Adviento significa venida. Nos hemos preparado para la venida de Cristo: la Natividad, o en términos más precisos, la Teofanía. La preparación ha sido emocional, espiritual e incluso física con los pasajes bíblicos y los ejercicios que la Iglesia nos ha prescrito.

The last stop on the Advent Journey is directed by the passage that comes to us from the Gospel of St. Luke and is read during the last Sunday worship before Theophany. It reads as follows:

Surgió también entre [los discípulos] una disputa sobre quién de ellos debía ser considerado el mayor. Pero Él les dijo: “Los reyes de las naciones se enseñorean de ellas, y los que tienen autoridad sobre ellas son llamados ‘bienhechores’. Pero no sea así entre ustedes; al contrario, el que es mayor entre ustedes, sea como el más joven, y el que gobierna, como el que sirve. Porque, ¿quién es mayor, el que se sienta a la mesa o el que sirve? ¿No es el que se sienta a la mesa? Sin embargo, yo estoy entre ustedes como el que sirve”. (22:24-28)

This is the “last station stop,” so to speak, before the celebration of the Theophany. Having learned the lessons of the last six weeks, today we move on to service. Jesus tells us, in no uncertain terms, that he comes to us to serve, presenting himself as an example for all of us to do the same: to serve one another. And he articulated this idea of the greatness through service, with his actions at the Last Supper by washing the feet of the disciples (John 13).

This is the last station stop because in order to serve you must first be spiritually and emotionally ready. This means you must be rid of egotism that will restrict or forbid you from serving others. Christian service is selfless, in other words, it demands that the self be put on hold while you tend to the needs of others. Without the training of the last fifty days, service would be extremely difficult because emotionally you were not ready to cast aside selfish pleasures, in service to someone else. Service comes from an empathetic heart. Empathy is the result of understanding the pain of others, or walking in their shoes.

The path of Armodoxy is simple and interconnected to everything, that is, every lesson is connected to every other lesson, to build upon and to give momentum and meaning to Faith. Today you are one step closer to the great news that Christ is in our Midst. Tomorrow, Theophany will be explained.

Oremos: Oh Señor, Jesucristo, nos has dado un ejemplo de amor y servicio. Haznos dignos de ser llamados tu Cuerpo Vivo, la Iglesia, amando y cuidando a los demás. Armodoxia para hoy: Lecciones desde Pasadena

La lección de hoy no proviene de la Iglesia, sino de la ciudad de Pasadena. A diez millas al noreste del centro de Los Ángeles, en la base de las montañas de San Gabriel, se encuentra la ciudad de Pasadena. Esta ciudad tiene el honor distintivo de dar la bienvenida al nuevo año cada 1 de enero con el Desfile del Torneo de las Rosas. Se estima que alrededor de un millón de turistas ingresan a la ciudad para ver el desfile de cinco millas y media, que cuenta con carrozas, bandas, caballos con jinetes, celebridades y campeones de fútbol americano. Otros 50 millones de personas lo ven a través de la transmisión televisiva.

El Desfile del Torneo de las Rosas de Pasadena comenzó en 1893. Las carrozas están construidas con hierbas y plantas totalmente naturales, utilizando más de 18 millones de flores cada año para crear las exhibiciones, lo que requiere 80,000 horas de trabajo humano.

Pero de todas las estadísticas notables que puedo mencionar sobre el desfile, hay una que lo distingue de todos los demás. ¡Pasadena tiene la regla de "Nunca en domingo"! The new year begins a few days before the Theophany. January 1st is a convenient time to access our life directions and make necessary changes to our course. It is a time to set goals and priorities. Jesus instructs us with the words, “No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; or else the new piece pulls away from the old, and the tear is made worse.” The new year doesn’t need to be patched and if it does, not with old habits. You don’t want to carry old baggage into the new year. Begin by a simple assessment of your life and what are the priorities you would like to implement. Think of the lesson of Pasadena’s Rose Parade. Are you ready to implement policies that will prioritize God in your life?

Oremos. Una oración para el Año Nuevo por la Rev. Marcy Sheremetta

Al amanecer de un nuevo año, demos gracias por todo lo que valoramos: nuestra salud, nuestra familia y nuestros amigos. Liberémonos de nuestros rencores, nuestra ira y nuestros dolores, pues no son más que cadenas que nos atan. Vivamos cada día de la manera más amorosa, con conciencia de Dios. Sirvamos a todos los que lo necesiten, sin importar su raza, color o credo. Mantengamos a Dios, según nuestro propio entendimiento, en nuestros corazones y cantemos su nombre cada día. Guiemos al mundo de la oscuridad a la luz, de la falsedad a la verdad y de lo incorrecto a lo correcto. Recordemos que todos somos uno, abrazando a todos y sin discriminar a nadie.

Armodoxy for Today: The New Year, Discipline and Theophany

All good things come with discipline. The New Year brings with it a convenient mark on the calendar – a before and after moment, a restart button, so to speak, and discipline seems to somehow be connected to everyone’s resolutions.

Discipline for the Christina includes a regular prayer life, engaging with the Teachings of Jesus, and regular participatory practice in community worship. Christianity engages the body, soul and mind with its teachings and practices.

Toward the discipline of the body, the Church prescribes fasting. We are now in the fasting period for Theophany.

Every major event in the Armenian Church, is preceded by a period of fasting. The practice can take different forms. Whether you fast completely or partially, the matter is between you and God, and no one else. In the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) Jesus instructs us to keep our religious practices, including fasting, between ourselves and God.

When you fast you only naturally think of food. Hunger brings pain physically and psychology you experience discomfort because you know that food is only a few steps or minutes and yet you are being deprived of food of your own will. In that discomfort you understand Christ’s words, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4)

The first day of fasting is truly the hardest because your body is acclimating to the hunger. On the second and third days your body begins to understand that there is a change and accepts hunger and focuses on strengthening the spiritual and psychological senses.

La Teofanía está cerca. Es la revelación de Dios, el Creador, Jesucristo en la tierra, en medio de nosotros. Estar preparados psicológica y emocionalmente ha sido el camino de las últimas semanas. Esta última semana, con la adición del ayuno, unimos todos estos elementos para recibir y saludar a Cristo en su Encarnación.

Si pudieras ver a Cristo en medio de ti, es decir, contigo, con tu familia y tus amigos, ¿cuál sería tu reacción? ¿Dirías: "¡Feliz Navidad!"? ¿Dirías: "Cristo está en medio de nosotros"? ¿O sería tu reacción más profunda? ¿Te sentirías sorprendido y lleno de asombro? Encontrar esa expresión perfecta de alegría al encontrarte con el Niño Jesús en medio de nosotros es el enfoque de este viaje de Adviento.

Let us pray, Lord Jesus, you were born and revealed, bringing Light into the world. Fill the darkness that surrounds me with the Light that is you. Fill my heart with your Love, so that there is no room for hatred, disease and evil. Strengthen me, allow me to grow in discipline so that I may meet you as disciple of your love. Amen.

“The Sons of Thunder” is how Jesus referred to two of his disciples, two sons of a man named Zebedee, according to the Gospel of Mark (3)

We can imagine why Jesus gave them such a nickname. Perhaps, like thunder they were uncontrollably loud? Brash? Maybe ready for a brawl? Or perhaps like Thunder they didn’t care if their message was welcome or not, they were ready to yell it out. Aggressive? Confrontational? Jesus called James and John the “The Sons of Thunder.”

San Lucas registra un evento en el que la gente de Samaria no quiso recibir el mensaje de Cristo; Santiago y Juan, al ver esto, dijeron: “Señor, ¿quieres que mandemos que descienda fuego del cielo y los consuma, tal como hizo Elías?”

In the Gospel according to St. Mark we see Jesus telling his disciples (chapter 10) that  “We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and to the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and deliver Him to the Gentiles;  and they will mock Him, and scourge Him, and spit on Him, and kill Him. And the third day He will rise again.” Perhaps a bit of surprise, discomfort, disbelief might have been the case for the disciples. Not so with the sons of Zebedee who came to Jesus and asked, “Teacher, we want You … to grant us that we may sit, one on Your right hand and the other on Your left, in Your glory.” Definitely low on the sensitivity scale. Imagine, your friend of 3 years tells you he’s going to die and you first question to him is about status in the afterlife?

Pero al mismo tiempo, sabemos que Jesús les dio la bienvenida. Estaban en el “Círculo íntimo” de amigos, a quienes, junto con Pedro, Jesús invitó a unirse a él en algunos momentos muy críticos de su ministerio, como cuando resucitó a la joven (Mateo 9) o en la Transfiguración, que reveló la Luz del Creador (Marcos 9).

Los Hijos del Trueno, en los años posteriores a la Resurrección, continuaron dando testimonio de Cristo Resucitado. Santiago se convirtió en el primer discípulo en ser martirizado por la fe, mientras que Juan llegó a ser conocido por la manera en que articuló el Amor de Dios. Fue el autor del cuarto Evangelio y de las cartas al final del Nuevo Testamento. Esta voz atronadora expuso el mensaje del amor como la conexión definitiva con Dios.

During these last days of the year, and in preparation for the Theophany, the Armenian Church remembers James and John, the Sons of Thunder. For us, we ask ourselves, how comfortable are we with the message of Christ and his love? Are we able to unashamedly proclaim it? How thunderous is our voice when we speak about Christ and the Love of God?
