Armodoxy for Today: 10x One Minutes on the Lord’s Prayer, Part 5- Your Will in Heaven and on Earth
Prayer often takes the form of a shopping list. In our conversation with God we present Him with a list of items we want, such as good health and peaceful days. But, as we heard early, in presenting the “Lord’s Prayer” Jesus informs us that our Heavenly Father already knows our needs before we ask him.
When we ask, May Your Will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven, we are acknowledging and submitting to God’s will. We have our wants and desires, in a word, we have our will, but herein we are relinquishing our will in favor of God’s Will. We submit to the power of God, who makes His sun shine on the good and the bad. (Matthew 5:45) And in so doing, we leave our selfish desires to one side and focus making His Kingdom come.

Of all the characters in the Nativity narratives, Joseph, the husband of Mary, the Mother of Jesus, is often the least discussed. Sometimes he’s even forgotten. According to the Gospel record, “After … Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.’” (Matthew 1)
Según las Escrituras y la Tradición de la Iglesia, José era carpintero de oficio y vivía en Nazaret de Galilea. Joseph gives us a very unique example by which to guide our lives. When we pray, we articulate, “Thy Kingdom come, Thy Will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” We ask that God’s Will be evident in our lives, here on earth. Jesus instructs us to pray these words because God’s Will is manifested here on earth through our participation. We pray and articulate it as such to remind us that we are participants in the Kingdom. Joseph understood that if God’s Kingdom was to come, his participation was essential. And so against all the odds, against the conventions and norms of the day, against the possibilities and improbability of a virgin birth, against the put downs of gossiping mouth, and humiliation by members of his own community, Joseph says, “Thy Will be Done” and obediently follows the order to take Mary as his wife.

Oh, St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Jesus taught with parables. This one came with a question. He begins, “A man had two sons, and he came to the first and said, ‘Son, go, work today in my vineyard.’ He answered and said, ‘I will not,’ but afterward he regretted it and went. Then he came to the second and said likewise. And he answered and said, ‘I [will] go, sir,’ but he did not go.”
Jesus then asks the simple question: “Which of the two did the will of his father?”
They said to Him, “The first.” (Matthew 21:28-32)
The first said no but regretted his decision to disobey and did it. The other, said he would do what was asked, but did not.
Our words are articulations of our mouth. Our actions, are the articulation of our spirit.

La única ubicación sobre la que tienes control es la tercera: la vida que transcurre entre el nacimiento y la muerte.
Esta realidad de tres ubicaciones se entiende mejor al observar las lápidas. La mayoría tiene tres símbolos grabados. El primero es la fecha de nacimiento de la persona. No tenemos control sobre cuándo o dónde nacemos. La segunda ubicación es la fecha de fallecimiento. El tercer símbolo es el guion que separa la fecha de nacimiento de la de fallecimiento. Ese guion representa nuestras vidas y es la única parte de la existencia que está, en gran medida, bajo nuestro control. Algunos guiones son cortos y otros largos, pero la verdadera calidad del guion reside en su grosor.
La vida y cómo la vivimos depende de ti. Es el guion —la vida que llevas— lo que tiene significado.
Una vez, un joven seminarista en un monasterio, en un alarde de orgullo juvenil, decidió jugarle una broma a uno de los monjes más ancianos y sabios. Sostuvo una mariposa en su mano y juntó sus dedos para cubrir al pequeño insecto. Le preguntó al monje si la mariposa estaba muerta o viva. Pensó para sí mismo: si el anciano responde que está viva, aplastaré a la mariposa y demostraré que se equivoca. Si responde que está muerta, abriré el puño y la mariposa saldrá volando. De cualquier manera, el monje se equivocará y quedará humillado porque el joven estudiante le habrá demostrado que estaba errado.
Al acercarse al monje, el joven mantuvo la mariposa cautiva en su puño detrás de la espalda. “Anciano, dime, ¿la mariposa que sostengo está muerta o viva?”. El viejo monje, para no dejarse engañar, respondió: “La respuesta está en tu mano”.
La madurez de la fe, que es el tema de esta semana, requiere que asumas la responsabilidad de tu vida, que reconozcas que Dios te ha confiado tu existencia y que depende de ti ser parte de la respuesta a: “Venga tu reino, hágase tu voluntad”. Nosotros somos quienes engrosamos el guion —la vida entre nuestro nacimiento y nuestra muerte— y asumimos la responsabilidad de si la mariposa vuela o es aplastada.
Oremos: Señor, ayúdame a comprender tu amor a través de la confianza que has depositado en nuestros humildes esfuerzos y la tremenda confianza que tienes en mí y en la humanidad. Dame la fuerza para presentarme responsablemente ante ti mientras sigo tus mandamientos y hago lo que es agradable a tus ojos. Amén.
