Armodoxy for Today: 10x One Minutes on the Lord’s Prayer, Part 9 – Protect us from Temptation
“And lead us not into temptation” is a bit misleading, when we recite it at the end of the Lord’s Prayer. It lends to the belief that somehow, we are on the puppet strings of the Grand Puppeteer, and we are begging that he does not steer us in toward temptation.
The true request here is, may God protect us from temptation. When we see, hear, or think tempting thoughts, may God give us the wisdom, the clarity of vision and the openness of mind to stay away from those things that draw us to sin.
Temptation is all around us. God doesn’t take us there. Rather, He gives us the tools with which we can overcome temptation. When Jesus offers us the Lord’s prayer, it is in the context of the Sermon on the Mount, where he is challenging us all to find purity of mind as we live our lives. God gives us the strength and will to not be led toward it.

Cuando ayunes, no pongas cara triste, como los hipócritas, que desfiguran su rostro para mostrar a los hombres que ayunan. De cierto te digo que ya tienen su recompensa. Pero tú, cuando ayunes, unge tu cabeza y lava tu rostro, para no mostrar a los hombres que ayunas, sino a tu Padre que está en secreto; y tu Padre que ve en lo secreto te recompensará en público. (Mateo 6:16-18)
El ayuno es la tercera expresión de fe que el Señor explica que es entre tú y tu Creador.
El ayuno es una privación física de alimentos. Al igual que la oración y los actos de caridad, el ayuno es un elemento más necesario en la vida del cristiano. Jesús no solo lo enseñó, sino que practicó el ayuno, más notablemente durante su período de 40 días de retiro en el desierto después de su bautismo y antes de comenzar su ministerio.
El ayuno fortalece la voluntad y la determinación de la persona. Durante el ayuno, uno siente hambre, a veces acompañada de dolor. Es en esos momentos de anhelo físico cuando comprendemos las palabras de Jesús durante su ayuno de 40 días: "No solo de pan vivirá el hombre, sino de toda palabra que sale de la boca de Dios".
Un llamado al ayuno y a la oración es un llamado a conocer tus fortalezas y tus límites. Es necesario para preparar y fortalecer tu ser interior para la guerra espiritual. Detrás de todas las guerras físicas que existen, hay batallas espirituales aún más grandes de las que no puedes escapar. A menudo, buscas fuera de ti mismo las soluciones a tus miedos y problemas. Cada uno de nosotros tiene dentro de sí la capacidad de ser parte de la solución.
Oremos: Señor y Dios nuestro, Jesucristo. Antes de comenzar tu santo ministerio aquí en la tierra, te retiraste y ayunaste. Nos enseñaste que no vivimos solo de pan, sino de toda palabra que sale de la boca de Dios. Que esas palabras sacien nuestra hambre de justicia y fortalezcan nuestra alma y conciencia para mantenernos firmes por la paz y el entendimiento. Te damos gracias junto al Padre y al Espíritu Santo. Amén.
