On this third day of our dive into ideas of freedom, it’s important to understand that we take this dive without regard to political ideology. Sure, we offer this series in anticipation of the Fourth of July celebration, and we live in political realities, and each of us comes to the mix with our own persuasions, but freedom is in itself a God-given and considered the birthright of the human soul.
The Armenian Church has lived within monarchies, kingdoms, dictatorships, oppressive and barbaric regimes, and even through atheistic Soviet society. The Gospel Message of Christ is greater than any political ideology and within the expression of the ancient Apostolic Church, that Message maintains its integrity despite the political climate of the age.
Declaring these truths is only half of the story. Living out the dream with our actions is the other half. The Independence Day celebration grants us an opportunity to reflect on our responsiveness to freedom and liberty, to the declarations we make, and to how those declarations are played out. Contemplate true freedom and independence as we continue tomorrow. This is today’s one-minute for Summertime.

Questions to More Questions (On Freedom & Independence part 2/5)
The United States of America celebrates its 250th Anniversary of declaring independence from England on the Fourth of July. For a quarter of a millennium, this country, a nation of states, has wrestled with the concept of freedom and its limits. The Declaration of Independence signed on July 4, 1776 expressed that equality among men was self-evident as an unalienable right given to these men by their Creator.
Which men? All men? Define “men”. Does that include women? Questions that have been asked and answered, and have provoked new questions along the way, have tested and continue to test the boundaries defined in the Declaration and subsequently in the Constitution of the United States. Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
This week, we are looking and listening to that voice… today’s one minute for Summertime.
For years, part of my office decor has been a framed copy of the Declaration of Independence. This is the document that was signed on this day, the fourth of July in 1776, by a group of men who were expressing their dream of freedom and independence. They proclaimed that there were “self-evident” truths, “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” And with these words the experiment in democracy, the United States of America, was born.
I find these thoughtful and beautifully crafted words to be sacred, because they express the inner dreams of humankind. In the Declaration of Independence can be heard the cries of the human soul for rights and equalities. Certainly, true religion has and always must advocate for those rights.

Այսօր Ամերիկայի Միացյալ Նահանգների Անկախության օրվա տարեդարձն է։ Հավասար իրավունքների, համընդհանուր ընտրական իրավունքի և մեծամասնության կողմից կառավարման ժողովրդավարական սկզբունքների այս փորձարկումը գրեթե 250 տարեկան է։ Այն հեռու է կատարելությունից, բայց, այնուամենայնիվ, համընդհանուր համաձայնությունը սահմանադրությամբ նախանշված «նպատակին» ձգտելն է։ 1776 թվականի այս օրը ստորագրված Անկախության հռչակագիրը պնդում է, որ «Մենք այս ճշմարտությունները համարում ենք ինքնին ակնհայտ, որ բոլոր մարդիկ ստեղծված են հավասար, որ նրանք օժտված են իրենց Արարչի կողմից որոշակի անօտարելի իրավունքներով, որոնց թվում են Կյանքը, Ազատությունը և Երջանկության ձգտումը»։
Այս խոսքերը գեղեցիկ և խորաթափանց կերպով են շարադրված մի ժամանակաշրջանում, երբ անկախությունը միայն երազանք էր մի խմբի համար, որը փախել էր բռնակալությունից և թագավորական լծից։ Կրոնը գոյություն ունի քաղաքական իրողությունների ներսում։ Անկախության հռչակագրում կարելի է լսել այն իրավունքների համար մղվող կոչերը, որոնք ճշմարիտ կրոնը պաշտպանել է նույնիսկ ճնշող հանգամանքներում։
Հայ եկեղեցին ապրել է միապետությունների, թագավորությունների, բռնապետությունների, ճնշող և վայրագ վարչակարգերի, նույնիսկ աթեիստական խորհրդային հասարակության պայմաններում։ Քրիստոսի Ավետարանական պատգամը վեր է ցանկացած քաղաքական գաղափարախոսությունից և պետք է պահպանի իր ամբողջականությունը՝ անկախ ժամանակաշրջանի քաղաքական մթնոլորտից։
1918-ից 1920 թվականներին անկախության կարճատև շրջանից հետո, Հայաստանը դարձավ անկախ երկիր 1991 թվականին՝ Խորհրդային Միության փլուզմամբ։ Վերջին 30+ տարիների ընթացքում այն ունեցել է իր փորձությունների ու նեղությունների բաժինը, և երբեմն գայթակղիչ է քննադատել մի համակարգ, որը երբեմն հանգեցնում է սոցիալական անարդարության և անհավասարության զանգվածների համար։
Այսօր, Ամերիկայի Միացյալ Նահանգներում Անկախության օրվա տոնակատարության հետ մեկտեղ, մենք հնարավորություն ունենք խորհելու իսկական ազատության մասին։ Մենք կարող ենք դիմել պատմությանը և տեսնել, որ 18-րդ դարի վերջից մինչև 19-րդ դարի սկիզբը՝ այսինքն ԱՄՆ-ի կյանքի ընդամենը 30+ տարիների ընթացքում, երկիրը հեռու էր կատարելությունից. գոյություն ուներ ստրկություն, մարդկանց դասակարգերի միջև կային տարբերություններ, կանանց թույլ չէին տալիս քվեարկել, և ցանկը շարունակվում է։ Կարևոր է ներողամիտ լինել նոր երկրների, ինչպիսին Հայաստանն է, հանդեպ, որոնք անցնում են իրենց աճի ցավերի միջով։
Սա նաև հնարավորություն է՝ խորհելու մեզ և մեր անձից վեր գաղափարներին մեր հանձնառության մասին։ Մենք հաճախ ենք խոսում Հայ եկեղեցու մասին՝ որպես քրիստոնեական ամենահին ավանդույթներից մեկի։ Այո՛, այն իր արմատները տանում է 2000 տարի առաջ՝ Հիսուս Քրիստոսի անձի հետ, բայց կա մեկ այլ իրողություն՝ Ցեղասպանությունը։ Երբ թուրքերը ցանկանում էին բնաջնջել և ոչնչացնել հայ ժողովրդին, նրանք հարձակվեցին Եկեղեցու վրա։ Ցեղասպանությունից հետո Հայ եկեղեցին մնաց ավերակների մեջ։ Այն իրողությունը, որ մենք ունենք այսօր, շնորհիվ այն բանի է, ինչը քաջ եկեղեցական առաջնորդները՝ թե՛ հոգևորականները, թե՛ աշխարհականները, միասին կառուցել են վերջին 100 տարվա ընթացքում՝ Ցեղասպանությունից ի վեր։
Ազատության մեծագույն արտահայտությունը այն է, երբ Դուք օգտագործում եք Աստծուց տրված Ձեր ստեղծագործելու կարողությունը։ Այսօր մի օր է՝ նվիրվելու այն գաղափարներին, որոնք բոլորս համարում ենք գրավիչ և անհրաժեշտ առողջ կյանքի համար՝ կյանք, ազատություն և երջանկության ձգտում։
Մենք աղոթում ենք Ամերիկայի համար, աղոթում ենք ինքներս մեզ համար և այսօր աղոթում ենք մեր Հայ եկեղեցու համար։ Երկնավոր Հայր, օրհնե՛ք նրանց, ովքեր օրհնում են Ձեզ։ Իմաստություն տվե՛ք առաջնորդներին։ Պահե՛ք մեզ զգոն՝ մեր կյանքի համար անհրաժեշտը հետապնդելու մեր հանձնառության մեջ։ Եվ պահե՛ք մեզ կենտրոնացած երկրի վրա խաղաղության և միմյանց հանդեպ բարի կամքի համար աշխատելու մեր ուխտի վրա։ Ամեն։
