Next Step with Fr. Vazken #815 — July 24, 2026
The challenge to understand Holy Scripture as a product of the fourth dimension, namely, its time, yet sharing the timeless truth of Armodoxy. Generational realities in communications, transportation, books, music and genocide. From Fr. Vazken’s notebook: a woman of faith finds peace and reconciliation. Generational Ends.

Armodoxy for Today: The Forgotten, part 8 – the Message
The document that professes the faith of the Christian Church, and Christian world is known as the Nicene Creed. It is a set of definitions that establish who is a Christian. It was formulated 1700 years ago, in 325, by representatives from different countries, gathering for the first time since Pentecost as the Universal Christian Church in Nicaea.
The four parts of the Creed explain God, as Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and the function of the Holy Church.
The longest portion in the Creed is the one about Jesus Christ – Begotten, not made, of the same substance as the Father, true God of true God… Actually, the council was called together by the Emperor Constantine to “sort out” the many misconceptions and heresies regarding the person of Jesus.
With all the details about Jesus Christ articulated, there is one crucial point that is forgotten, it is his message! The message of Jesus, as the fulfilment of the law and the prophets, as this revolutionary understanding that we are all children of God, that our only hope in this world is to extend ourselves to one another, that love is the most powerful weapon against hatred and evil. As mentioned, the purpose of the meeting was about the person of Jesus, which the Creed articulates. So, it is not that it was intentionally left out, but today, even a simple, “We believe in the message of faith, hope and love as expressed by Jesus Christ” would have been welcomed by this 21st century observer.
For us today, the understanding of Christ’s message is essential in defining a Christian. What good is it to proclaim Christianity without living the life prescribed by Christ? For this reason his teaching in the Sermon on the Mount is so over-the-top important -that if going to the altar of God, you remember you have a grievance with someone, leave your gift at the altar, go first and make up and then come to the altar. (Matthew 5:24) In very simple terms, more important than God (leaving your gifts) is our relationship with one another.
We pray, Lord Jesus Christ, the way, the truth and the life, you have given us a message of unconditional and uncompromising love. Open my heart so that I understand that that love is the only way, truth and life. Amen.
Fear breeds worry. Worry, like a can of carbonated soda which is shaken over and over, will push through the weakest point, to find relief. The can of soda explodes when the top is pulled, and even worse, if the top isn’t pulled, will burst at the seams. In the case of humans, the body has many points that are not meant to be put under such stress. Pressure builds up and something has to give, sooner or later. The sooner you abandon the worry, the less chance of catastrophic effects on the body.
God speaks to us through His Holy Church. His Voice is heard through the Scriptures and Teachings, and often in ways that our dull faculties find it difficult to sense.
A few days ago, a friend sent me a picture of the interior of a Catholic church in Rome. The message accompanying the picture asked if I could decipher the writing under one of the arches. I zoomed in on the picture and found Armenian letters ոչ եղիցին փուշ ցաւոց staring at me. I looked at the words and translated the words respectively, “no be thorn pain.” I didn’t understand much else beyond the individual words, and my mind, which is usually up to the challenge of deciphering codes, was preoccupied with worries over recent health issues affecting a loved one.
The worry caused by those concerns kept me up that night and the following day I went into church with the baggage of these worries weighing me down. I happened to run into a priest that morning, one who had spent many years at the Vatican. Just the right person to ask, I thought. I showed him the picture and asked if he was aware of this writing and he too had not seen it, but he went beyond a word-for-word translation and gave me the gist of the message: Not even a thorn will hurt you!*
It was a message that came to me loud and clear. My worries were to no avail. Not even a thorn could hurt us.
If this was only one example in my life, I would not bring it up, but God’s promise has been reiterated to me. Ask and you shall receive, says the Lord. Why do we continue to doubt? Or in the words of our Lord, “…Do not worry… For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things.”
I leave you with this important adage which I never tire from reminding myself: If you’re going to pray, don’t worry. And if you’re going to worry, don’t pray.

As we get closer to the end of Lent, we prepare for the days that follow. In other words, the Lenten period prepares of for life. We think back on the lessons of Lent and are anxious to apply them.
Our Lord Jesus Christ plainly explains that trusting God means to completely submit to His will. It means to allow Him to be God. It means to enjoy the life that He gives us and to fly with the birds, and be clothed like the lilies of the field. To enjoy all that God has given us requires us to have complete and total trust and faith in Him, by allowing Him to be Father. One of the key teachings of the Armenian Church as expressed in the Divine Liturgy is that in the old covenant God was known as Lord, but Jesus set up a new relationship, unlike any other, so that we dare to call God, “Father.” Our Father who art in heaven… If we believe He is our Father then as a heavenly Father, He takes care of every single part and aspect of that universe.
Certainly, we will always have fears and apprehensions of tomorrow, but we need to diminish them and the only way, the only cure for that is faith. To strengthen our faith, to really look at the examples that He gives us, let us look for all of the examples that are plainly around us. Alongside the birds of the air and the lilies of the fields are the simple smiles of our children, the warm embraces of our loved ones, the monumental signs of the mountains, the crashing waves, the moon and stars, each of them telling us, as Albert Einstein says, “God does not play dice with the universe.” Life has not haphazardly come into being. We are not here by accident. God loves us and takes care of us.
Your act of charity today is to implement the lessons of Lent and reduce your anxiety, eliminate your fears and trust in God. Grilled red pepper and eggplant sandwich is the Lenten delicacy with the recipe linked below.

How easy it is for me to live with you, Lord!
How easy it is for me to believe in You!
When my mind is distraught
and my reason fails,
when the cleverest people do not see further
than this evening and do not know
what must be done tomorrow —
You grant me the clear confidence,
that You exist, and that You will take care
that not all the ways of goodness are stopped.
At the height of earthly fame I gaze
with wonder at that path
through hopelessness —
to this point, from which even I have been able to convey
to men some reflection of the light which comes from You.
And you will enable me to go on doing
as much as needs to be done.
And in so far as I do not manage it —
that means that You have allotted the task to others.
Amen

Jesus invites us to perfection. The invitation in itself is overwhelming. The definition of being human implies imperfection. How, then, can we strive for something that is unattainable? What is this unrealistic expectation all about?
In the same passage that we’ve been looking at this week, read on the Sunday of Expulsion, Jesus says, “Unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.” The scribes and Pharisees were learned men of the law, who knew scripture by heart, what we may call deep-dive details, and the intricacies of the Law. Definitely Final Jeopardy would be a sinch. Yet, Jesus was not satisfied with their approach to their Faith. For them, Faith had become a ritual without meaning. As the saying goes, familiarity breeds contempt and it seemed they were all too familiar with the rule of the law to the point that it lost meaning.
The Armenian Church identifies saints as human who have risen to the challenge of life. As such, they are models – examples – for our life. Today, I offer this one prayer/meditation from St. Gregory of Narek for our focus and to ask the hard question about our faith – your faith – how do you describe your relationship with God?
From St. Gregory of Narek
Faith, that happy and favored word, which lasts forever untarnished and unbounded,
honored together with charity and hope brings the rewards of truly clear vision, perfect wisdom, acquaintance with God and familiarity with the Exalted. For if the faith of a mustard seed can cast a great mountain into the depths of the sea, then truly we should accept it as the first step toward eternal life. Faith, this simple and clear form of worship,
means setting aside doubt to see the future and hidden with the eye of the soul. Faith is honored in a glorious trinity with charity and hope. For if you view these three as distinct aspects of one and the same mystery, you shall forever be magnified in God. And if you believe, you shall love and through love have hope in his unseen rewards. Glory to him forever. Amen. (Translated by Thomas J. Samuelian)
Today, engage in one act that demonstrates your Faith. And fast or abstain from that which ritualizes your Faith to the point of meaninglessness.
Red cabbage slaw is on the menu today. Enjoy and we’ll continue tomorrow.

Jesus Christ was the first non-violent revolutionary. He brought about a revolution – a change, a shift in understanding – without using physical force. Just the opposite, he took on physical force. His teachings have been adopted by many to bring about change – fundamental change – in nations, political systems and of course, in the person. During the last century, the likes of Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., Nelson Mandela implemented principals of non-violent resistance in liberating people from oppression.
Armenia, and its leadership, early on, adopted these principles. Jesus’ teachings, as expressed in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) are not for the weak or the meek. I am convinced that 4th century Armenian King Tirdat, who had armies (plural!) under his command, who understood strength and diplomacy, who understood military strategy… I am convinced that Tirdat accepted Christianity because he saw it as power for victory and not for surrender. He proclaimed Armenia as the first Christian nation in 301AD because he saw the strength of this Faith, based on the message of Jesus Christ, was about overcoming evil with the power of love. He understood the power of resurrection over death!
That focus on resurrection is the tie that binds together the religious leaders we have discussed this past week, from Martin Luther King to Khrimian Hayrik to Gregory the Chainbearer to Catholicos Vazken I of blessed memory. We can cite many more. They all were convinced that resurrection was possible after crucifixion because they believed in the Resurrection of Christ. They shared a common conviction in the power of Christianity through the Resurrection. That conviction is what made their leadership real, unquestionable and worthy of following.
It is the same conviction possessed by the Holy Apostles, a conviction that witnessed to the power of Christ and brought people to the Faith. Each of the Apostles went to their death proclaiming the Resurrection as truth. You do not put your life on the line for a lie. If the Resurrection to which they witnessed was a lie they would not have died a torturous death. There was no peer pressure to tell the truth either. The Apostles were each separated by distance, one in Rome, another in Ethiopia, India, Armenia and elsewhere throughout the world. They went to death for the truth, each in his own way. That’s conviction. It’s the one element historians do not mention, but the proof of the Armenian experience, that is, Armodoxy, is a living testament to that Faith.
We pray today a prayer from St. Mesrob Mashdots, Mighty King, refuge of the thirsty, Savior of the troubled, who succumbed to suffering for us at the hands of rulers. Prohibit Satan from enslaving those whom You have saved. Forbid the Evil One from seeking refuge in the House of God. With Your divine love, have mercy upon your creation. Amen
