Accenting vs. Breaking Christian Stereotypes

Next Step #253 – April 11, 2013
Returning from a lively conversation with Stepan Partamian at GCC, Fr. Vazken reflects on Christianity today, as applied in society. Ethnic identity via the church? Breaking the stereotypes of the Church and Christianity. More topics: The cornerstone of Armodoxy is to look beyond Biblical mythology. Talking about birth control to a people who have experienced Genocide? Case in point: Rwanda. Non violent resistance and disciplining the masses. Case in point: Armenia. The different perspectives of religion; the Holistic approach to God via Armodoxy. Much more…

A Question of Morality

Next Step #226 – October 4, 2012

Where does morality – our sense of right and wrong – come from? Is it possible to have a morality apart from God? Armodoxy and the In His Shoes models hold some clues to the answer. The Road to In His Shoes and to Armodoxy is just as important as arriving there. The parable of the “Good Turk” can be heard by Jesus in the Armenian Church. Ayn Rand: “Morality has to be a rational science.”

Tying Up Water and Other Excuses

Next Step #153 – May 13, 2011

Christianity beyond the names; Fr. Vazken explores the excuses for covering our guilt as Christians as he looks at the Fast for Darfur; it’s implications and strength in commemorating atrocities. Picking on homosexuality: what Christians must remember before picking up the stone. Balancing good actions with humility. Watch out for Lucy in the Sky! Part 2 of Armodoxy – unravelling the central message of Resurrection. Story from Naseredin Hodja: http://armodoxy.blogspot.com/2011/05/are-you-tying-water-with-that-rope.html

No Death at This Funeral

Next Step #98 – April 22, 2010

“Let the Dead Bury the Dead” says Jesus to bring our focus back to the empty tomb. Find the power in the message of Christ as Armodoxy gives us a unique view of life with tragedy. Love conquers evil, light overcomes darkness and life transforms death. Insight on how Gomidas Vartabed sang during the Genocide? Walking In His Shoes gives us a chance to do the work of Christ, especially today, in a world overcome by disease, war and famine. In His Shoes Ministries is taking the past, making it relevant today and forging the future.

Fresh Air from Buenos Aires

Next Step #97 – April 15, 2010

From beautiful Argentina, the Next Step comes with some fresh air – dropping the In His Shoes seeds in a new generation. Taking responsibility for Genocide as children of Genocide, Fr. Vazken expounds on the philosophy of the Next Step. Here is a primer for our ministry laced with examples and stories from a short visit to the South American community in Buenos Aires.  Is there an “answer” to Genocide? And what is the “next step” – all in this remote podcast.

From Women to Reformation

Next Step #92 – March 11, 2010

Beyond women in the church, here’s a look at the possibility of reform, through protest. The story of Seta Simonian – first woman acolyte of the Orthodox Church in America. The World Vision workers martyred in Pakistan are remembered. Letters from listeners and a “Letter to Hitler” all part of this mix. A call to action and reformation dominates the ending.

Escape to the Desert, but not from Life

Next Step #91 – March 4, 2o1o

On Location at the Nevada/Arizona boarder – this message comes from the desert where God has painted the rocks with His artistic style. Drugs, alcohol, the desert and even religion (ala Marx) is escapism, but Jesus approaches the topic via an unusual parable, that of the “Dishonest Steward.” Views of the Grand Canyon and our digital lifestyle gives way to thoughts about immortality – not to be excluded by Sirac (have you heard of this book?). The Chilean earthquake knocks Earth (not Robertson) off of its axis. A visit to the St. Jude Ranch for Children and the groundwork for Fr. Vazken’s vision/dream for unwed mothers and children of domestic violence. Isn’t half of 40 = 20? An explanation for “Michink” – why Wednesday and not Saturday? Pray for us, St. Thaddeus.

Heart Prints

Next Step #90 – February 25, 2010

Has anyone ever tried Christianity? Karl Marx’s challenge is applied to Christianity. Can the Prodigal answer that challenge? Answers to the questions concerning the Vazkenian Seminary – Find out where and who these people are. Fr. Vazken opens a candid view of the priest during the Lenten season – what are some of his challenges? And a surprise message from the 1200th Century – in St. Nersess Shnorahali’s Ninth Hour of the Havadov Khosdovanim. Finally – the evolution toward the “Next” step.
