Badarak: Heaven & Earth Meet
Translators of Today: The Holy Badarak
Last weekend we celebrated the Feast of the Holy Translators, a group of men whose lifetime spanned hundreds of years, between the 5th and 12th centuries. Their gift of translation was to take something complex and render it understandable. This week we will feature translators for today. A group of people who take an aspect of faith and break it down for us … translate it for us. Today’s message comes to us from Rev. Fr. Hetoun, read by Dn. Christaphor:
Holy Badark: the meeting of heaven and earth.
The Holy Divine Liturgy, or Holy Badarak, is not simply a church service. It is one of the deepest mysteries in the history of humanity, where time merges with eternity, earth with heaven, and man with God. Where the world is accustomed to seeing bread and wine, the eyes of faith see the Body and Blood of Christ—as the gift of life, salvation, and immortality.
Man is created not only to live, but also to commune with God. Yet sin broke that communion, making man lonely, restless, and inwardly divided. The Holy Divine Liturgy is God’s response to that tragedy: it is the table of reconciliation, where God once again calls man to Himself. Here man does not merely remember Christ, but participates in His work of salvation in a living way—His cross, death, and Resurrection.
Philosophically, man is always searching for the meaning of life, truth, and eternity. Yet human reason, however elevated it may be, is unable to overcome the boundary of death on its own. The Holy Badarak shows that eternity is not an idea, but a Person—Jesus Christ, Who gives Himself to man as the bread of life. What the human mind cannot create, God bestows by His grace.
The Holy Divine Liturgy is also a school of love. It teaches that a person cannot be a true Christian if he has not learned to forgive, to sacrifice, to give thanks, and to love. Holy Communion is not merely an act of individual piety; it makes us one body in Christ—responsible for one another and called to serve the world.
In today’s world, where noise often drowns out the voice of the soul, the Holy Divine Liturgy becomes that sanctuary of silence where a person finds himself again, comes to know God, and rediscovers the true purpose of his life. Here we do not flee from the world, but receive the grace by which we are able to transform the world—beginning with our own hearts.
We lovingly invite you to participate in the Holy and Immortal Badarak Sunday morning.
Come to pray, receive Holy Communion, and rediscover that peace which only Christ can bestow, “Come, taste and see, for the Lord is sweet” Psalm 33:9.
Fr. Hetoun serves as the parish priest of the Holy Mother of Go Monastery of Akhtala, Armenia. Join us tomorrow for another installment of Translators of Today as part of Armodoxy for Today.
