A Mission Statement to Love With

Next Step #71 – October 14, 2009

Reflections from a clergy conference: New issues for a new day – artificial insemination is only the beginning. More on same sex marriages. The ordination of a priest and remembering the heretics. Before you look for the Unified Field Theory, try to find the Mission Statement of the Church; a look at Luke 4 and adopting Jesus’ mission statement as our own. Who are the blind and the poor? Is the answer a pleasant surprise?

From Numbers to Light – it’s the connection that matters

Next Step #58 – July 15, 2009

Next Step begins with an interesting number theories from listener Yuri in St. Petersburg, Russia. Is it by chance that #57 had all the digits in the date stamp? If so, what about zero? Can you shed some light on that? Jesus did exactly that – with the Transfiguration. Light was not spared to tie us into the beginning of all creation and the end of time as we know it. God’s promise to open our hearts to love and the well-lit path is explored by Fr. Vazken’s expose of the feast of Transfiguration. But don’t fret the esoteric themes, there’s a serving of fish and chips in this episode. It happens to be everything you need and more. Listen in to a wild ride from numbers to light and realize that they are all connected.

Playing at the Blackberry Bowl

Next Step #33 – January 29, 2009

What’s really important in life? It’s easy to lose focus and pop the drug of irrelevancy. In this podcast, Fr. Vazken takes the listener on a run through topics that weave the question of relevancy. Superbowl is this weekend, Acadamy Award nominations are in and a father shoots his children, wife and self because he’s at the edge of hopelessness. How do we reconcile all of these events? Pope Benedict uses Youtube and revokes excommunication on four bishops. In a globalized world and economy, find the necessary word that sets you apart – you are the BEST as a child of God. “Sev Toot” is coined today!

Two Kindred Spirits Separated By Millennia

Next Step #31 – January 14, 2009

John the Baptist and Martin Lurther King Jr. are two giants – one a Biblical figure, the other contemporary, yet they serve the same God and the same Lord. What is the legacy left by these ushers of the Way? Fr. Vazken brings together the work and mission that has driven these people to point the way to Christ. They stood up courageously against the power structure, urging peace, justice, and love, even unto death, and thus became martyrs for their unwavering preaching of the Kingdom of God.

Also, a look at the life and ministry of Fr. Mesrob Sarafian, an archpriest of the Armenian Church who went to his eternal rest this week. Notes from Oakland California, including an emotive reading from his funeral rite.

Tune in to start the new year with a revelation that comes only from above.

The Ox, House, and Wife on Advent

Next Step #26 – December 10, 2008

On the Great Banquet, or WWJWFHB = (What would Jesus want for his Birthday?) The answer is given in scripture and in this podcast! What were the Jesus “parents” like? We got a glimpse of them in Montrose, of all places. And what a headache they COULD have had, instead did they take the Advent prescription? Only Mary’s pharmacist knows for sure? This is one of a series of podcasts following the Advent journey to Christmas. At the end of the road is the prize: A new view of Christmas – not in a stable in Bethlehem, but as the only true representation of Christ’s revelation.
Music: Gor Mkhitarian plays the Lord’s Prayer – a new rendition of Jesus’ words. Join in for all the excitement of this Holiday cast.

Shaking Christmas Vampires

Next Step #25 – December 3, 2008

You’ll find this episode filled with “Happy Holiday” cheer, and here’s a hint: it’s not because Fr. Vazken wants to be politically correct! Christmas is coming and with the season of Advent, you’re invited to look within and at how the Christ child is being born around you and then within.

Also, in this episode we look at Vampires and the undead. As crowds line up to watch “Twilight” and emotions heat up, we compare it with the undead in the church, namely the saints, both those with a capital and a small ‘S’. The last segment of the podcast is dedicated to the 20th Anniversary of the earthquake in Armenia (December 7, 1988) and the formation of Armenian electronic multimedia through sain.org and the foundation for In His Shoes Ministries.

Small Steps Lead to Big Dreams

Next Step #21 – November 5, 2008

Barack Obama is President! A dream comes true. Mines explode in Karabagh ending the dreams of others. Fr. Vazken returns from the Obama campaign trail in Las Vegas and talks about the enduring power of dreams. Jesus tell us, “I tell you the truth, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.” John 12:24 Through this sacrifice it produces much, transforming into something greater. What are the sacrifices made by people in our past? Why did the good die young? “Abraham, Martin and John,” by Dion is featured in this podcast. Also, a special interview with Gala Danivola, Program Coordinator in Nagorno Karabagh for The HALO Trust, an organization dedicated to removing landmines and other unexploded ammunitions from former conflict zones, talks about their work.

An End to Worries

Next Step #18 – October 15, 2008

The financial crisis felt around the world is causing anxiety, tension and worries. Where and when will it end? What happens next? All the questions are ripe for the picking, until you connect to the source of our freedom from fear. As Jesus instructs through the Gospel of St. Matthew, chapter 6, today’s message is directed to the lack of trust in the financial markets and – shall we say – God? This is a Next Step to spiritual comfort from the “Lilies of the Field” to the “Birds in the Air”, it is a call for complete surrender and trust in God. It’s a challenge that’s presented this time, through the unique view of Armenian Orthodoxy.
